In 2004 the firm hired well known upstream oil and gas lawyer Uisdean Vass to head its new Oil and Gas Unit, based in the Aberdeen office. Uisdean, who holds an LLM in Oil and Gas From Louisiana State University, has twenty years Oil industry experience, including the North Sea, Louisiana, Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil. Maclay Murray & Spens LLP now offers a North Sea and international transactional service, covering all aspects of upstream practice, including licensing' acquisitions unitization, transportation agreements and gas sales etc. The Oil and Gas Unit also has extensive oil service contracting experience and is actively engaged in assisting British oil service companies internationalize; here the focus is Central Asia, the Middle East, West Africa and Latin America.

Uisdean's many international connections and linguistic abilities (fluent in Spanish and Portuguese) bolster the services of the Oil and Gas Unit.
